The Homeowner’s Guide to Smart Thermostat Installation

These thermostats make it easy for you to keep track of your home heating and cooling systems via a free app. You can access your thermostat information via the app on your laptop, tablet, or smartphone. Here are a couple important things to remember when you assess your smart thermometer installation and purchase.

Smart Thermometers Have Specific Voltage
When you get ready to install your smart thermometer, be sure to turn off the power to the heating and cooling system to avoid injury. It is essential that you install a smart thermometer with matching voltage requirements. Fire and property damage is a risk with voltages higher or lower than the manufacturer's specifications. You will find that many smart thermometers also require an additional C-wire to function properly, which keeps the thermostat hooked up to the furnace.

Smart Thermostat Compatibility Requirements
The smart thermostat packaging will tell you how to assess if it is compatible with your home's system. While installing smart thermostats isn't too difficult of a job, it is very important to wire them properly. You'll also find that no amount of special wiring will get two non-compatible brands to work together. Many thermostats are made only for low-voltage HVAC systems, or 24v HVAC systems.

Installing a Thermostat
Installing a thermostat is a fairly short task that will require a screwdriver, masking tape, and pencils to temporarily hold wires. After turning off the power to the air conditioning and heating systems at the main circuit, unscrew the cover plate and the mounting screws underneath to remove the entire thermostat.

You will now be able to see several exposed wires. Disconnect the wires. Label them temporarily with masking tape and a letter, then wrap them around a small pencil to keep them from moving around and getting mixed up. You may already have a C-wire in use on the current wiring system, or there may be an unused one hiding in the wiring. You will almost always need a C-wire for your new smart thermostat.

Separate the front and back of the new thermostat and begin by screwing the back on to the wall first with the mounting screws. Connect the wires according to the diagram in the owner's manual. Install the batteries, make sure that your thermostat base is level on the wall, and press the front plate onto the back of the thermostat.
